Red Eye

All of us have taken pictures, or witnessed photographs taken by friends, that suffer from the dreaded red eye. Why does it happen, and can we do anything about it?

The reason it occurs is that your subject is looking straight at the flash. Because of the low light the pupils will be wide open and when the light enters the eye the blood vessels at the rear of the eye reflect the light back to the lens, resulting in red eye. Now that you know why it takes place you will have some idea how to stop it occurring.

So how can we prevent it from happening? One way is to leave your flash turned off, or you could ask your subject not to look directly at the camera.

Your digital camera might possess a red eye reduction function. This is a pre-flash flash. The primary flash leads to the subjects pupils shutting. As a result, when the photograph is taken using the next flash not as much light enters the eyes.

The best solution is if you can afford it to buy an external flash gun. You can secure the flash unit to the side of your camera permitting the light to hit your subject more from the side. You can also bounce the flash off a white wall or ceiling to soften the light, preventing harsh shadows falling on the model. This also softens the light and prevents harsh shadows, making a more flattering photograph.

If after all of this information you still finish up with red eye all is not lost.

All image editing software has some programme to eliminate the dreaded red eye. If you do not at the moment own an imaging manipulation programme I provide some advice about which are the best for the cash spent in an article at www.focusonlinephotography.com As every single one of the different software have their own process of curing red eye I will not take this topic any further.

If you are intending to take your photography to an advanced plane it is important that you obtain a good manipulation software.
